Oh, what a Neitzel: MSU upsets No. 1 Wisconsin

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/21/2007 - East Lansing, MI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Drew Neitzel scored 11 of his 28 points during a game-clinching run in the final minutes, as Michigan State downed top-ranked Wisconsin, 64-55, at the Breslin Center.

Neitzel, who hit 10-of-17 shots from the floor, including 6-of-11 from three- point range, hit three treys during a 17-2 burst that turned a 49-45 deficit into a decisive win. His runner with 3:03 left broke a 51-51 tie and gave the Spartans the lead for good. He followed that with his final three of the night with 2:25 remaining for a 56-51 cushion.

Travis Walton added 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for Michigan State (20-8, 7-6 Big Ten), which has won three straight and most likely played itself off the NCAA Tournament bubble. Raymer Morgan had 12 points and eight boards for the Spartans, who spoiled the Badgers' debut atop the latest Associated Press poll.

Marcus Landry had 18 points for Wisconsin (26-3, 12-2), which had a five-game win streak halted one day after being voted the No. 1 team in the country. Alando Tucker tallied 16 points for the Badgers, who were held to just two field goals over the final seven minutes.

The game was close throughout. The Spartans scored the game's first seven points before Wisconsin came back to take an 8-7 lead. The Badgers led by as many as six points, 16-10, before going into halftime with a slim 30-29 edge.

The second half remained tight with the Badgers taking their largest lead of the stanza after Landry drained a three-pointer with 7:44 left for a 47-43 advantage.

The teams then exchanged buckets before Neitzel took over. His first three started the run with 4:38 left. He followed that with another trey to put the Spartans in the lead. Kammron Taylor hit a pair of free throws to tie the game with 3:37 on the clock, but Neitzel followed that with his right-handed runner as the shot clock expired and his ensuing three-pointer continued the onslaught.

The setback for the Badgers somewhat ruins the anticipated showdown against second-ranked Ohio State this Sunday.

Game Notes

The Spartans improved to 17-1 at home this season...MSU has won three of the last four in this series...The Badgers shot just 36 percent for the game (19- of-53)...MSU hit 22-of-48 shots for 46 percent.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
